What is this collection about?

Infectious diseases across Latin America and the Caribbean remain a major public health challenge. In recent years, the region has experienced a resurgence of vaccine preventable illnesses, repeated mosquito borne viral outbreaks, and multiple zoonotic spillover events. These trends are further compounded by the impacts of climate change, the geographic expansion of emerging pathogens, and persistent inequities in health system infrastructure across countries.

With this cross-journal Collection, the editors at Nature CommunicationsCommunications HealthCommunications Medicine, and Scientific Reports invite manuscripts that highlight the status and advance understanding of infectious diseases in LAC.

Nature CommunicationsCommunications Health, and Communications Medicine will consider original Articles, Reviews and Perspectives. Scientific Reports will consider original Articles only.

Why is this collection important?

This Collection supports and amplifies research related to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG 3) – Good Health and Well-being, by advancing our understanding of infectious diseases across Latin America and the Caribbean. By bringing together research on vaccine-preventable diseases, mosquito-borne viral infections, zoonotic spillover events, emerging pathogens, climate change, and health system challenges, the Collection aims to inform public health strategies, strengthen disease surveillance and preparedness, and contribute to reducing the burden of infectious diseases across the region.
