Collection Overview

Scientific Reports has launched a Guest-Edited Collection on Towards zero emissions aviation and maritime transport.

Aviation and maritime transport are central to global life and trade, but also key sources of greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution. Reducing their environmental impact while still meeting high energy, safety, and performance needs requires innovative, multidisciplinary solutions.

This will be a Collection of original research papers and will be open for submissions from all authors – on the condition that the manuscripts fall within the scope of the Collection and of Scientific Reports more generally. We are welcoming submissions until 24th June2026.

Why is this Collection important?

“Aviation and maritime transport are vital to global trade but present significant decarbonisation challenges. Achieving zero emissions is the most urgent strategic priority in transport management today. I am excited by this Collection’s multidisciplinary focus, bridging alternative energy research with experimental validation. Its impact will be substantial, providing the evidence base required to define future policy and operational standards for sustainable mobility. Researchers should submit to this Scientific Reports Collection to gain high visibility and contribute directly to the transformative, data-driven innovations necessary for a cleaner, more resilient global transport network.” - Prof. Pere Suau-Sanchez

This Collection also supports and amplifies research related to: SDG9 - Industry, innovation & infrastructure and SDG12 - Responsible consumption & production.

Why submit to a Collection?

Collections like this one help promote high-quality science. They are led by Guest Editors, who are experts in their fields, and In-House Editors and are supported by a dedicated team of Commissioning Editors and Managing Editors at Springer Nature. Collection manuscripts typically see higher citations, downloads, and Altmetric scores and provide a one-stop-shop on a cutting-edge topic of interest.

Who is involved?

Guest Editors:

  • Levent Bilgili, Bursa Technical University, Türkiye
  • Muhammad Arif Budiyanto, Universitas Indonesia, Indonesia
  • Pere Suau-Sanchez, Universitat Oberta de Catalunya, Spain

Internal Team:

  • In-House Editor: Ines Trindade, Scientific Reports, Germany
  • Commissioning Editor: Nancy Rogerson, Fully OA Brands, Springer Nature, UK
