The Handbook of Social Problems appears in a thoroughly revised new edition, continuing the tradition of the established volume edited by Günter Albrecht and Axel Groenemeyer. It provides a comprehensive overview of the development of the sociology of social problems and current debates in the German-speaking context. The handbook examines how social problems are not objective facts but are socially constructed through societal processes. The first part addresses key controversies within sociology, particularly the tensions between constructivist approaches, critiques of power and domination, and the practical application of sociological knowledge to social policy. A central focus is placed on the relationship between processes of problematization, social control, and the institutionalization of social order. Major theoretical perspectives within the sociology of social problems are reconstructed and critically discussed. In addition to sociological approaches, the volume draws on insights from related disciplines, including history and criminology, in order to capture the complexity of social problems from an interdisciplinary perspective. In its second part, the handbook explores 32 selected topics that represent major contemporary societal challenges and analyzes the ways in which they are constructed as social problems.

Das Handbuch Soziale Probleme erscheint in einer aktualisierten Neuauflage und setzt die Tradition des etablierten Werkes von Günter Albrecht und Axel Groenemeyer fort. Es bietet einen umfassenden Überblick über die Entwicklung und aktuelle Debatten der Problemsoziologie im deutschsprachigen Raum. Das Handbuch beleuchtet, wie soziale Probleme nicht als objektive Gegebenheiten, sondern als gesellschaftliche Konstruktionen hervorgebracht werden. Dabei werden im ersten Teil grundlegende Kontroversen innerhalb der Soziologie – insbesondere die Spannung zwischen Konstruktivismus, Herrschaftskritik und gesellschaftspolitischem Anwendungsbezug – aufgegriffen und weitergedacht. Ein zentraler Fokus liegt auf dem Verhältnis von Problematisierungsprozessen, sozialer Kontrolle und der Institutionalisierung von Ordnung. Rekonstruiert werden wichtige theoretische Positionen der Problemsoziologie. Neben soziologischen Perspektiven werden Bezüge zu anderen Disziplinen wie Geschichtswissenschaften und Kriminologie hergestellt, um die Komplexität sozialer Probleme umfassend zu erfassen. In der letzten Zeit beschäftige ich mit zunehmend mit interdisziplinären und internationalen Schnittstellen – unsere gesellschaftlichen Herausforderungen erfordern einen Zugang der über die eigene fachliche Fokussierung hinausgeht.

My areas of focus include Migration Research, Gender Studies, Cultural and Urban Sociology and Research, Political Sociology, Sociology of Work and Economic Sociology. More recently, I have become increasingly engaged with interdisciplinary and international projects, as the challenges facing our societies require approaches that extend beyond the boundaries of disciplines and languages.
