The field of marine science is constantly evolving, with new discoveries and advancements shaping our understanding of the oceans, research urgently needed, for example,  to address global challenges such as the effect of climate change on marine ecosystems, or how the health of the ocean itself may impact weather patterns and the marine life it supports.

BMC Marine Science aims to publish research a wide array of topics, emphasizing research on marine biodiversity, marine disease and marine conservation as well as oceanographic research.  The journal will focus on the impacts of climate change on marine health, coastal and estuarine science, and the sustainability of fisheries and aquaculture. Research on marine microbiology, biochemistry, and technological advancements in marine science will also be considered.

Aligned with the objectives of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), BMC Marine Science particularly encourages submissions focused on Life Below Water (SDG 14). The journal will promote research into reducing marine pollution, protecting marine ecosystems, and minimizing ocean acidification.

Following the ethos of the BMC series, this journal stands for open, robust, and reproducible science with freely available data to speed up the pace of discovery. We support transparent peer review and make editorial decisions based on the validity and rigor of a study rather than its perceived impact.

We are now actively recruiting editorial board members ahead of the official launch. To find out more about this or other ways to get involved in BMC Marine Science, please get in touch – we would love to hear from you! My email is alison.cuff@biomedcentral.com

Marine biodiversity and conservation

BMC Marine Science is calling for submissions to our Collection on Marine biodiversity and conservation. This Collection aims to advance our understanding of marine ecosystems and its challenges, including pollution, climate change, and habitat loss. We welcome research on novel conservation strategies, marine conservation policies, and the socio-economic aspects of marine resource management. By integrating ecological, technological, and policy insights, this Collection aims to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and showcase new research that safeguards our oceans' rich biological heritage for future generations.

We invite contributions that explore a range of topics within marine biodiversity and conservation, including, but not limited to:

  • Habitat restoration
  • Species conservation strategies
  • Impacts of anthropogenic activities on marine life
  • Role of marine protected areas in biodiversity preservation
  • Novel methodologies in marine research
  • Citizen science initiatives
  • Policy advocacy for sustainable management practices

This Collection supports and amplifies research related to SDG 14: Life Below Water.

If your research addresses environmental management, policy, or sustainability issues, please consider submitting to our sister collection, please submit to our sister collection Conservation of marine and coastal ecosystems in BMC Environmental Science.

All manuscripts submitted to this journal, including those submitted to collections and special issues, are assessed in line with our editorial policies and the journal’s peer review process. Reviewers and editors are required to declare competing interests and can be excluded from the peer review process if a competing interest exists.

Marine pollution and microplastics

Marine pollution, particularly from microplastics, has emerged as one of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time. As the global production of plastics continues to rise, the oceans, which cover over 70% of our planet, serve as both a sink and a conveyor of these materials. Microplastics not only threaten marine biodiversity but also pose risks to human health and economic stability. The urgency to address this issue has gained momentum due to growing awareness and public concern over the long-lasting impacts of plastic pollution.

In light of these developments, we have opened a Collection in BMC Marine Science dedicated to the critical examination of marine pollution and microplastics. This Collection aims to bring together a wide range of interdisciplinary research that explores the sources, impacts, and potential solutions.

Topics considered include:

  • Environmental fate and transport of microplastics
  • Ecological consequences on marine life and ecosystems
  • Socio-economic implications of plastic pollution
  • Innovative remediation strategies and technologies
  • Case studies from diverse marine environments

This Collection supports and amplifies research related to SDG 14: Life Below Water.
