Upon reviewing this study, I found it particularly valuable because it explores the increasingly recognized connection between nutrition, gut health, and cognitive functioning. The investigation of olive oil consumption, especially its different subtypes, in relation to gut microbiota and cognitive changes among older adults offers a novel perspective on healthy aging. In my firm belief, what makes this research especially significant is its focus on individuals who were cognitively healthy at baseline but at heightened risk of cognitive decline, highlighting the importance of preventive approaches rather than treatment after impairment occurs. Given the limited human research examining the gut–brain axis in this context, the study has the potential to contribute meaningful evidence to the field and advance our understanding of how dietary choices may support cognitive health and overall well-being in later life.
