About Marta Giovanetti

My research investigates gene flow in pathogen populations, using phylogenetics and phylogeography to understand viral outbreaks and translate findings into public policy. I focus on recent arboviral outbreaks in Latin America (Zika, Chikungunya, Dengue, Yellow Fever) and SARS-CoV-2 in Brazil, Italy, and Africa, integrating genetic, spatial, and ecological data. My work combines virus genetic data with clinical and demographic information to study the epidemiology and ecology of viruses in natural populations. After earning my PhD in molecular evolution of RNA viruses from the University of Rome Tor Vergata and conducting Ebola fieldwork in Sierra Leone, I began postdoctoral research at FIOCRUZ on arthropod-borne virus evolution. I am currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sciences and Technologies for Sustainable Development and One Health at Università Campus Bio-Medico di Roma, where I teach Microbiology and enhance genomic surveillance of emerging viral pathogens in Latin America through collaborations with PAHO/WHO. My work explores drivers of virus introductions into novel regions, including Europe, under climate change. Leveraging nanopore sequencing advances, we have generated over 100,000 viral genomes from Brazil and Latin America. I am part of the CLIMADE (https://climade.health/), a global consortium developing tools to mitigate climate-amplified diseases. My research focuses on real-time genome generation and analysis to reveal origins and transmission dynamics of high-impact viral pathogens.
