About Matteo Augello
Matteo Augello obtained his M.D. Degree at the University of Perugia in 2018, and then completed his Residency in Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine and his Ph.D. In Translational Medicine at the University of Milan in 2023 and 2026, respectively. He also took an advanced course in Next Generation Flow Cytometry at the Flow Cytometry Academy of the University of Milan in 2021, and refined his clinical research skills during the HIV Summer School organised by EACS in 2023 in Lisbon. He is currently Research Fellow at the Infectious Diseases Lab, Department of Health Sciences, University of Milan.
Dr. Augello’s main research interests lies in the immune responses to viral infections, with a special focus on HIV, and the role of the microbiota in infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance. Thanks to his medical background, these interests are approached with a strong translational perspective with the aim of bridging the gap between laboratory activity and clinical science. Dr. Augello is also involved in teaching and tutoring activities for medical students at the University of Milan, and is active member and collaborator of national and international scientific societies, among which SIMIT, EACS, ESCMID.
During the last years, Dr. Augello conceived and conducted a number of research projects aiming to characterise immune responses to SARS-CoV-2 natural infection and vaccination in people living with HIV. These studies led to several publications as first author in peer-reviewed journals (Augello et al. Curr HIV/AIDS Rep 2023; Augello et al. AIDS 2023; Augello et al. iScience 2024; Montesi, Augello et al. J Transl Med 2024; Augello et al. Vaccine 2024; Augello et al. AIDS 2024; Augello et al. Commun Med 2025) as well as presentations to national and international conferences. In this context, he has been awarded with the “Best Basic Science Abstract” at the CROI-ICAR Awards 2024 for the abstract “Immune responses to an original/BA.4-5 bivalent booster of SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccine in PWH on ART, #P388” presented at CROI 2024 in Denver (Colorado), USA.
Dr. Augello is currently working on different projects aiming to characterise virologic and immunologic factors involved in persistent inflammation and immune activation as well as non-AIDS comorbidities in people living with HIV. In this regard, he has been recently awarded an Individual Research Grant from ESCMID for the project “Association between ultra-low level soluble p24 and adverse clinical outcomes in virologically suppressed people with HIV (SpARROW)”.
