Tevis Jacobs has spent more than 20 years advancing the understanding of surfaces in manufacturing. His degrees are from the University of Pennsylvania, Stanford University, and the University of Cambridge. He has served as Whiteford Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science at the University of Pittsburgh. He is the President of Surface Design Solutions.

How do you measure a surface?

We sent the same surface to 153 people—from academia, industry, and national labs—and asked a simple question: “How rough is this surface?”. The wild disagreements between them revealed that this is not a simple question. The eventual consensus, reached over three years, reveals how to do better.
