Researchers as Street Sweepers: Clearing Paths Through Complexity
I recorded a simple scene: a street sweeper clearing a large yard covered with fallen leaves.
At first glance, it looked like an ordinary act of maintenance.
But the longer I watched, the more it reminded me of research.
Yet much of our work is surprisingly similar to sweeping leaves.

The yard in the video was not empty.
It was covered by thousands of fallen leaves.
Each leaf represented something real: a fragment of time, an event, a process, a piece of information.
The street sweeper did not create the ground beneath the leaves.
The ground was already there.
What the street sweeper did was reveal it.
Research often works in the same way.
Modern society produces enormous amounts of information. Data, reports, regulations, experiences, scientific articles, AI-generated outputs, and countless observations accumulate every day.
Like fallen leaves, information accumulates faster than our ability to interpret it.
The challenge is no longer simply producing information.
The challenge is creating understanding.
In my recent work on Human–AI interaction, recursive knowledge circulation, and distributed cognitive systems, I have increasingly viewed research as a process of clarification rather than accumulation.
The researcher contributes experience and practical observation.
Artificial intelligence contributes synthesis, exploration, and structural possibilities.
Reality provides validation and constraints.
Knowledge emerges through the interaction of these elements.
In this sense, researchers may be less like inventors and more like careful sweepers.
We do not always create the path.
Sometimes we simply clear enough leaves for others to see it.
Perhaps the true value of research is not adding more information to the world, but helping the world make sense of the information it already has.
