Strengthening One Health Systems Amid Changing Global Conditions for Infectious Disease Control

The global context for infectious disease prevention and control is undergoing profound change. The COVID‑19 pandemic exposed critical gaps in preparedness, coordination, and surveillance across human, animal, plant, and environmental health systems, while accelerating broader pressures from climate change, ecosystem disruption, antimicrobial resistance, and competing global health priorities. Together, these challenges underscore the urgent need to strengthen integrated One Health systems that can anticipate, prevent, and respond to infectious disease threats.

This Collection focuses on the scientific, technical, and governance foundations of One Health approaches for infectious disease preparedness, prevention, and response. While a companion Collection in Infectious Diseases of Poverty examines new approaches within a changing global financing landscape, this Collection centers on how One Health science is operationalized and translated into policy and practice under evolving global conditions. Topics of interest include but are not limited to:

  1. Integrated One Health surveillance and early warning systems, including lessons from COVID‑19
  2. Cross‑species and environmentally mediated transmission of infectious diseases
  3. Antimicrobial resistance across human, animal, agricultural, and environmental domains
  4. Governance and coordination mechanisms enabling One Health action
  5. Translating One Health evidence into policy and cross‑sectoral practice
  6. Case studies of One Health system implementation at local, national, or regional levels

This Collection contributes to a wider Super Collection across One Health Outlook, Globalization and Health, and Infectious Diseases of Poverty. The collaboration brings together complementary perspectives on the changing global health financing landscape: political economy and governance, infectious disease control in low-resource settings, and the financing of integrated human, animal, and environmental health systems. Together, the three Collections offer a cross-disciplinary account of how geopolitical and economic change is shaping preparedness, equity, resilience, programme sustainability, and the future of global health governance.
