Professor Dr. Mohamed Kamel ALTINAWI, who is known to be an ablaze flare of wisdom, stands tall amongst such luminaries; a man whose life’s work is a testament to the power of logic, knowledge, kindness, dedication, and compassion. Born in 1955, he is still as young-spirited as it is impossible even for the youth to be.

The Knowledge-Thirsty Voyager
A scholar forged in the fires of many schools of thought, Professor Altinawi’s quest for knowledge has been profoundly international. He has journeyed across all the continents, immersing himself in the rich intellectual heritages of multiple countries. Each experience added layers to his perspective, broadening his vision and sharpening his already bright cutting insights. This global odyssey not only fuelled his scientific accomplishments but also enriched his character, allowing him to embrace different cultures and ideas with extended arms and an open heart. From the former USSR's Leningrad (currently Russia's St. Petersburg), to Los Angeles of California in the USA, from Minsk in Belarus, to Paris in France, from Sana'a in Yemen, to the Sudan's Khartoum, and plenty more! He graduated as a dentist in 1978 and defended his PhD with honour in 1989, earning his doctoral degree early in 1990, and becoming a Full Professor ever since 2002. With that in mind, he is not only the first Syrian to hold a PhD in the field of paediatric dentistry but rather also the founding father of modern and evidence-based paediatric dentistry as well as the most senior professor in the dental field here in the entire region.

The Academic Genius
Professor Altinawi has demonstrated an insatiable curiosity and an extraordinary dedication to expanding the horizons of human understanding from the earliest days of his academic career. His scientific achievements are remarkable, etched deeply into the greatest stones of paediatric and preventive dentistry, dental trauma management, sedation, behavioural psychology, and logic. This fact on its own proves how he is, indeed, an unparalleled encyclopaedic professor. Yet, what truly distinguishes him even much further is the manner in which he joins intellectual rigour with a deeply empathetic approach to life and mentorship. Speaking of mentorship, Professor Altinawi has supervised over 60 MSc. dissertations and 40 PhD theses, to date, participated in judging over 180 MSc. and PhD. studies, locally, not to mention internationally. He has given thousands of lectures and advanced training courses, has organised many conferences and workshops.
