In my article for Agenda Digitale (Network 360), titled Attacchi Cyber all’Industria Spaziale: Difendiamola Prima del Disastro, I examine how weaknesses across satellite systems, mission‑operations architectures, and sprawling supply chains expose critical infrastructures to increasingly sophisticated attacks.
The analysis underscores a stark reality: satellites now underpin essential sectors—defence, agriculture, transport, finance—rendering orbital assets both indispensable and acutely vulnerable. Cyber intrusion into ground‑segment networks, telemetry channels, or upstream manufacturing processes can cascade across entire ecosystems, threatening not only operational continuity but societal stability.
The article argues that safeguarding the Euro‑Atlantic space domain requires a decisive shift toward resilience‑centred governance. Public and private organisations must adopt stronger cybersecurity standards, invest in specialised InfoSec expertise, and cultivate structured collaboration with ethical hackers capable of identifying latent weaknesses before adversaries exploit them. Space systems, with their long lifecycles and complex interdependencies, demand proactive defence rather than reactive mitigation.
Ultimately, the piece positions cyber protection of the space industry as a strategic imperative. Without coordinated action, the next major cyber incident may not unfold on terrestrial networks but in orbit—where the consequences would reverberate across continents.
