What is this collection about?

Cellular metabolism comprises a complex network of biochemical processes that sustain cellular function by providing energy, biosynthetic precursors, signaling molecules, and enzymatic cofactors. In the context of cancer, metabolic rewiring of malignant cells is a key adaptive trait that supports tumor outgrowth. Conversely, the immune system acts to restrain cancer progression through cell type-specific metabolic programs that are dynamically shaped by the physicochemical conditions of the surrounding microenvironment.

In this Nature Progress Oncology, Nature Communications, Nature Cancer and Communications Biology collection, we highlight latest advances in understanding how key metabolic pathways regulate cancer–immune interactions and shape the balance between immunosuppression and immune activation. Topics of interest include metabolite crosstalk within the tumor microenvironment, metabolic modulation of lymphocyte and myeloid cell function, metabolite-mediated signaling and epigenetic modifications, or redox-regulated forms of immunogenic cell death, as well as strategies to harness these in the context of cancer immunotherapy. We welcome studies on novel metabolic routes and auxiliary processes beyond canonical pathways.

Why is this collection important?

This is a cross-journal collection between Nature Progress Oncology, Nature Communications, Nature Cancer, Communications Biology, and Scientific Reports. Authors are welcome to submit to any of the participating journals. All manuscripts published in the collection are hosted on a dedicated nature portfolio portal, giving articles high visibility beyond the journal they are published in.

Why submit to a collection?

Collections like this one help promote high-quality science. They are led by In-House Editors who are experts in their fields and supported by a dedicated team of Commissioning Editors and Managing Editors at Springer Nature. Collection manuscripts typically see higher citations, downloads, and Altmetric scores, and provide a one-stop-shop on a cutting-edge topic of interest.
