What is this collection about?

Kidney disease impacts millions globally and encompasses a range of conditions that lead to impaired renal function, ultimately resulting in complications such as cardiovascular disease and decreased quality of life. The global burden of kidney disease is rising, necessitating a deeper understanding of the biological mechanisms underlying disease pathophysiology, progression, and management, and developing biomarkers to monitor or predict disease status. Given the multifaceted nature of kidney disease, research in this area is crucial for developing effective preventive, diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.

This Collection aims to bring together the current advances in renal health, including topics of interest such as:

• Novel biomarkers for early diagnosis.
• Genetic predisposition to kidney disease.
• Impact of lifestyle interventions on kidney health and function.
• Innovative treatment strategies in nephrology, including precision medicine, regenerative medicine, and gene editing.
• Preclinical models and mechanistic studies of kidney disease
• Advances in kidney transplantation.
• Social determinants of health that contribute to kidney disease disparities.

We welcome the submission of all papers that advance our understanding of Kidney Disease and Health. This is a joint Collection across Communications Medicine, Nature Communications, Communications Biology, and Scientific Reports. All submissions will be subject to the same review process and editorial standards as regular submissions at the participating journals. 

Nature Communications and Scientific Reports will only consider original research articles. Communications Medicine will consider original research Articles, Reviews, Perspectives, and Comments on preclinical and clinical advances in kidney disease and health. Communications Biology will consider original research Articles, Reviews, Perspectives, and Comments on subtopics related to the biological mechanisms underlying kidney disease pathology, or preclinical models of kidney disease.

Why is this collection important? 

Kidney disease is a growing global health challenge, affecting millions of people and contributing substantially to morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs worldwide. Despite advances in diagnosis and treatment, many forms of kidney disease remain underdiagnosed, and patients often face limited options to prevent disease progression and associated complications.

This Collection supports research aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG 3) – Good Health and Well-being by advancing our understanding of kidney disease mechanisms, improving early detection and risk prediction, and highlighting innovative therapeutic approaches. By bringing together basic, translational, and clinical research, the Collection aims to accelerate progress toward better kidney health and improved outcomes for patients worldwide.
