What is this collection about?
Sex hormones, comprising Androgens, Estrogens, and Progestogens are critical signaling molecules responsible for diverse functions in the human body. Deficiencies in appropriate sex hormone production due to conditions such as menopause, hypogonadism, and certain intersex variations can result in serious impacts on both mental and physical health, as well as on overall quality of life. Similarly, gender-incongruent sex hormone levels among transgender individuals often cause severe impacts on well-being. Hormone replacement and gender-affirming hormone therapies seek to restore healthy sex hormone balance to patients deficient in the appropriate endogenous hormone production.

Despite the high efficacy of these hormone therapies among patients, our understanding of long-term impact and optimal therapeutic regimens remain under-researched, and clinical practice is often heterogenous without clear underpinning research. We therefore invite researchers to contribute clinical and public health studies into sex hormones and the impact of sex hormone therapy across topics; including, but not limited to:

  • Menopause
  • Gender-affirming care
  • Endocrine therapy in cancer
  • Hypogonadism
  • Hormonal disorders, such as polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome and precocious puberty

This Collection aims to expand our understanding of the biology, epidemiology, and clinical impact of sex hormones and hormone replacement therapy, improving patient well-being and support. We welcome the submission of all papers relevant to Sex Hormones and Hormone Therapy, including original research articles and Reviews. All submissions will be subject to the same review process and editorial standards as regular submissions at the participating journal.

Why is this collection important?
Sex hormones play a critical role in physical and mental health across the life course. Conditions such as menopause, hypogonadism, hormonal disorders, cancer treatment, and gender incongruence can significantly affect well-being, while hormone therapies have become increasingly important in patient care.

Despite their widespread use and demonstrated benefits, important gaps remain in our understanding of the long-term effects and optimal use of hormone therapies. This Collection aims to strengthen the evidence base by bringing together research on the biology, epidemiology, and clinical impact of sex hormones and hormone therapy, ultimately helping to improve patient outcomes and support.

This Collection also supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being) by advancing knowledge that can contribute to more effective, evidence-based, and inclusive healthcare.

Supporting World Sexual Health Day 2026

As part of Springer Nature's activities for World Sexual Health Day 2026, we are highlighting this Collection to raise awareness of the important role that sex hormones and hormone therapies play in health and well-being across the life course. From menopause and hypogonadism to gender-affirming care and endocrine therapies, research in this area can help improve evidence-based and inclusive healthcare for diverse populations. We encourage researchers working in these fields to explore the Collection and contribute to advancing knowledge that supports better health outcomes worldwide.

Why submit to a collection?
Collections like this one help promote high-quality science. They are led by Guest Editors and In-House Editors who are experts in theirfields and supported by a dedicated team of Commissioning Editors and Managing Editors at Springer Nature. Collection manuscripts typically see higher citations, downloads, andAltmetricscores, and provide a one-stop-shop on acutting-edgetopic of interest.

Who is involved?
This Collection is managed by the editorial team at Communications Medicine, who work closely with editorial board members and subject experts to curate high-quality, peer-reviewed research on the health impacts of extreme temperatures.

Life Course Epidemiology

This Collection explores how biological, environmental, and social factors across the lifespan shape health outcomes, with particular attention to chronic disease, multimorbidity, and healthy aging. We welcome original research on longitudinal health trajectories, behavioral and socioeconomic determinants, and epigenomic influences, in alignment with UN Sustainable Development Goal 3.
