From Forest Fragments to Farmlands: New Collection on Bird Ecology and Conservation

This collection addresses one of the most pressing challenges in modern ornithology: understanding how birds respond to landscapes increasingly shaped by human activities. Habitat fragmentation, agriculture, ecological restoration, infrastructure development, and other forms of land-use change are transforming ecosystems worldwide, with profound consequences for bird populations, communities, and conservation outcomes.
Birds in Fragmented and Anthropogenic Landscapes invites submissions that place landscape change at the center of ecological inquiry. We welcome studies exploring how fragmentation, habitat degradation, and landscape configuration influence avian diversity, distribution, behavior, and ecosystem function, as well as research with clear implications for conservation planning, management, and restoration. Topics of interest include bird responses to agricultural and agroforestry systems, secondary and restored forests, large-scale biodiversity patterns, and the use of citizen-science or spatial datasets to understand bird-landscape relationships.
By bringing together research from diverse regions and ecological contexts, this collection aims to advance landscape-explicit ornithological science and foster solutions for conserving birds in an increasingly human-dominated world. Researchers working at the intersection of avian ecology, conservation biology, landscape ecology, and environmental management are encouraged to contribute their latest findings.

Birds in Fragmented and Anthropogenic Landscapes
Birds increasingly persist in landscapes reshaped by fragmentation, agriculture, restoration, infrastructure, and other forms of human land use. These changes affect habitat availability, community structure, ecological function, and conservation outcomes.
This topical collection in Ornithology Research welcomes studies that analyse fragmentation and habitat loss, land-use change, and landscape structure as central ecological drivers, rather than merely as background context. We are particularly interested in research grounded in human-modified landscapes and with clear implications for the conservation or management of bird communities. Recent papers in the journal illustrate this focus, including studies showing how human-modified landscapes shape bird populations and communities across regions, habitats, and spatial scales.
By bringing this work together and inviting new submissions, the collection aims to strengthen landscape-explicit ornithological research and highlight studies that connect ecological mechanisms with applied conservation challenges.
Topics of Interest
We invite submissions that address, but are not limited to, the following themes:
- Effects of habitat loss and fragmentation, degradation, and landscape structure on bird populations and communities
- Bird responses to agriculture, agroforestry, restoration, secondary forests, and forest–matrix mosaics
- Functional, taxonomic, phylogenetic, or spatial responses to human-modified landscapes
- Use of large-scale or citizen-science data to understand the effects of landscape change on birds
- Implications for conservation planning, management, and restoration
Out of Scope
To maintain a focused and coherent collection, submissions will not be considered if they primarily involve:
- Captive, ex-situ, laboratory, or purely technological studies without landscape-level ecological inference
- Species inventories, checklists, or behavioural studies that do not explicitly address the effects of changes in landscape structure.
- Climate change modelling studies in which land use or landscape structure is not a central driver.
