Guide for longevity and flexibility in interior architecture - Discover Cities

This research utilizes principles of interior architecture to achieve environmentally responsible interior design by focusing on specific sustainability elements identified through the study. Various methodologies were employed, including data collection, observation, hypothesis testing, and statistical analysis of efficiency ratios, applied to two case studies: Vincent Callebaut’s and JW Associates’ bamboo office interiors. The statistical analysis of efficiency ratios identified five key factors for assessing the sustainability of interior spaces. These factors include energy efficiency ratios, water efficiency ratios, material efficiency ratios, carbon intensity ratios, and social return on investment ratios. Each of these aspects was analyzed in relation to different environments influencing interior architecture, aiming to reveal the formal characteristics of interior design elements. The findings were synthesized into a diagram illustrating the relationships among natural characteristics, environmental characteristics, and formal characteristics. These aspects were comprehensively studied, particularly in relation to sustainable materials and sustainable interior design practices, emphasizing strategies to control these elements to ensure sustainability. The proposed framework was applied to works by Vincent Callebaut Architectures and JW Associates, where specific sustainability factors were analyzed. The data analysis through the five proposed efficiency ratios provides a guideline for achieving longevity and flexibility in interior architecture, as demonstrated by the two models. This research introduces a novel framework for sustainable interior design based on efficiency ratios, offering valuable insights for the field.
