The field of marine science is constantly evolving, with new discoveries and advancements shaping our understanding of the oceans, research urgently needed, for example,  to address global challenges such as the effect of climate change on marine ecosystems, or how the health of the ocean itself may impact weather patterns and the marine life it supports.

BMC Marine Science aims to publish research a wide array of topics, emphasizing research on marine biodiversity, marine disease and marine conservation as well as oceanographic research.  The journal will focus on the impacts of climate change on marine health, coastal and estuarine science, and the sustainability of fisheries and aquaculture. Research on marine microbiology, biochemistry, and technological advancements in marine science will also be considered.

Aligned with the objectives of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), BMC Marine Science particularly encourages submissions focused on Life Below Water (SDG 14). The journal will promote research into reducing marine pollution, protecting marine ecosystems, and minimizing ocean acidification.

Following the ethos of the BMC series, this journal stands for open, robust, and reproducible science with freely available data to speed up the pace of discovery. We support transparent peer review and make editorial decisions based on the validity and rigor of a study rather than its perceived impact.

We are now actively recruiting editorial board members ahead of the official launch. To find out more about this or other ways to get involved in BMC Marine Science, please get in touch – we would love to hear from you! My email is alison.cuff@biomedcentral.com

Sustainable fisheries and aquaculture

BMC Marine Science is calling for submissions to our Collection on Sustainable fisheries and aquaculture. The global demand for seafood continues to rise, driven by population growth and increasing consumer awareness of the nutritional benefits of fish and other aquatic products. As a result, sustainable fisheries and aquaculture have emerged as critical areas of research and practice, exploring how best to balance ecological integrity with economic viability.

The urgency of addressing challenges such as overfishing, habitat degradation, and the impacts of climate change has never been more important. This Collection aims to provide a platform for researchers and practitioners to share novel findings, methodologies, and technologies that contribute to the advancement of sustainable practices in fisheries and aquaculture.

We invite contributions that explore a wide array of topics within sustainable fisheries and aquaculture, including but not limited to:

Innovative management strategies

Integration of traditional ecological knowledge

Advancements in aquaculture technology

Role of policy and governance in promoting sustainability

Case studies and empirical research on sustainability practices

Theoretical frameworks addressing the multifaceted nature of sustainability in aquatic systems

Zero waste technologies for sustainable aquaculture

This Collection supports and amplifies research related to SDG 14: Life Below Water.

All manuscripts submitted to this journal, including those submitted to collections and special issues, are assessed in line with our editorial policies and the journal’s peer review process. Reviewers and editors are required to declare competing interests and can be excluded from the peer review process if a competing interest exists.

Publishing Model: Open Access

Marine biotechnology

BMC Marine Science is calling for submissions to our Collection on Marine biotechnology, research that harnesses the biological potential of marine organisms to address some of the most pressing challenges we currently face.

As we navigate climate change, biodiversity loss, and the urgent need for sustainable resources, the marine environment offers a wealth of untapped genetic and biochemical resources that can be used to aid advancements in healthcare, agriculture, and environmental sustainability.

This Collection aims to compile cutting-edge research that not only highlights the latest breakthroughs in marine biotechnology but also emphasizes the significance of collaboration across disciplines to maximize the impact of these findings on global challenges.

We invite contributions that explore various applications of marine biotechnology, including but not limited to:

Bioactive compounds derived from marine organisms

Bioremediation techniques utilizing marine microbes

Development of sustainable aquaculture practices

Innovations at the intersection of marine biotechnology, genomics, and synthetic biology

New therapeutics and environmental solutions

This Collection supports and amplifies research related to SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being and SDG 14: Life Below Water.
