In my article for TLG – The International Affairs Journal of the London School of Economics, titled Easing Tensions Between Russia and the West Could Raise Indonesia’s International Standing, I examine how President Joko Widodo’s steadfast adherence to an “Asian manner” of diplomacy has elevated Indonesia’s international profile.
Widodo’s audacious decision to invite both Russia and Ukraine to the G20 Summit in Bali exemplifies Jakarta’s commitment to harmony over partisanship. His subsequent journeys to Kyiv and Moscow—where he simultaneously affirmed support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and negotiated essential assurances on food and fertiliser supplies—underscore Indonesia’s aspiration to serve as a bridge of conciliation amidst global discord.
Whether these endeavours will yield measurable de‑escalation remains uncertain. Yet the attempt itself is diplomatically consequential. Indonesia’s willingness to engage opposing parties, temper hostilities, and uphold multilateral dialogue signals a maturation of its geopolitical identity. In an era marked by fractious geopolitics, Jakarta’s approach demonstrates how middle powers can shape international discourse through principled engagement and calibrated neutrality.
