Welcome Dr. Ram Prasad as Section Editor for Discover Applied Sciences
Published in Bioengineering & Biotechnology, Microbiology, and Plant Science
Discover Applied Sciences is a fully open access, broad-scope journal launched in 2018 under the former journal title SN Applied Sciences (2023 Impact Factor: 2.8). The journal is indexed in DOAJ, ESCI, Scopus and several other indexing services. The journal has Section editors for the various research disciplines covered by the journal. These are members of the academic leadership at the journal, advise the publisher on key developments in their field, and play an active role in the academic scope and in the development of the journal.
Dr. @Ram Prasad joined the Discover Applied Sciences Editorial Board in 2022. He has always been keen to contribute towards the Journal's growth and development. He expressed his interest to increase his engagement with the journal and move to the role of a Section editor when we announced the position.
We had a brief discussion about the role and its responsibilities, and he graciously accepted to be the Section editor of the journal’s section Applied Life Sciences.
Here's a short interview with our new Section Editor:
What is your current research focused on?
My work centers on applied and environmental microbiology, plant-microbe interactions, and nanobiotechnology, particularly in plant and microbial nanobiology. Our focus on the green synthesis of nanoparticles derived from plant parts and microbes, examining their applications in medicine and environmental remediation. This approach emphasizes environmental sustainability and utilizes clean, bio-compatible, non-toxic, and cost-effective methods. The blend of photocatalytic and antimicrobial properties coupled with their intrinsic biocompatibility and eco-friendliness make nanoparticles, which will be boon for wastewater treatment.
What are the most interesting emerging topics or new technologies/new developments in your field of research?
Our field has many interesting developments such as nanomaterials are using in agriculture for drug delivery, biofortification and nanosensing. Further engineered nanomaterials are utilized in agroecosystems to deliver efficient techniques for precision farming, plant genetic engineering, maintaining soil health, food processing, and packaging. They are also used in cost-effective diagnostic tools to improve crop and soil health. Nevertheless, a better understanding of the ecotoxicological consequences of the nanomaterials, their ecotoxicological sustainability, general health risks to those using and deploying nanoproducts, and risks to the workers who manufacture nanoproducts is required, still presents new research opportunities.
Tell us about your role as an Editorial Board Member (EBM) on the journal Discover Applied Sciences and your vision as a Section Editor, and what made you want to take up this role!
As a Section Editor, I aim to create an inclusive platform that promotes collaboration with academician, responding to emerging trends while maintaining high standards to attract impactful global research. My motivation stems from the journal’s dedication to applied research and interdisciplinary approaches, allowing me to align its editorial direction with my own interests in bridging theoretical advances and real-world applications.
Do you have any advice for new members of the board?
Absolutely. New Editorial Board members should approach their role with responsibility, curiosity, and collaboration. Understanding the journal's scope, standards, and review process is crucial for making informed decisions. Active participation, sharing insights, and suggesting improvements are encouraged, as is maintaining open communication with the editorial team for support and collaboration. This role offers an opportunity to significantly contribute to the field.
Lovely to have you onboard in this new role, Dr. @Ram Prasad, and I am sure your contribution will help the journal reach new heights!

Earth and Environmental Sciences: Crop Diversification for Resilient Ecosystem
Crop diversification is a strategic approach in agriculture that involves cultivating a range of different crops on a farm rather than relying solely on one type of crop. This practice offers numerous advantages, including reducing the risk of crop failure due to pests, diseases, or adverse weather conditions. By growing a variety of crops, farmers can also maintain soil health and fertility more effectively, as different crops have varying nutrient requirements and growth patterns. Moreover, crop diversification provides farmers with opportunities to tap into diverse markets, stabilize their income throughout the year, and contribute to environmental sustainability by promoting biodiversity and reducing reliance on chemical inputs. Overall, crop diversification is a key aspect of modern farming practices aimed at enhancing resilience, profitability, and ecological stewardship. Along with this, a resilient ecosystem is one that demonstrates the capacity to withstand and recover from disturbances while maintaining its essential functions and supporting biodiversity. These ecosystems possess several key characteristics that contribute to their resilience. Firstly, they have high levels of biodiversity, including a variety of species with different functions and niches. This diversity helps buffer against environmental changes and increases the likelihood that some species will thrive even under adverse conditions. Additionally, resilient ecosystems often exhibit strong ecological connectivity, allowing for the movement of species and genetic material across landscapes, which promotes adaptation and enhances overall resilience. They also tend to have robust feedback mechanisms and adaptive management strategies in place, enabling them to respond flexibly to disturbances and incorporate new information into their resilience strategies. Overall, resilient ecosystems play a crucial role in sustaining life on Earth by providing essential services such as clean air and water, climate regulation, and habitat for wildlife, while also supporting human well-being and livelihoods.

Applied Life Sciences: Adaptation and Resilience in Agriculture: Addressing Climate Change with Science and Technology
Agriculture is pivotal to the European economy and global food supply, yet faces increasing challenges from climate change. Understanding the spatial and temporal variability of environmental factors (climate, soil, water) is crucial for managing agricultural landscapes and adapting to climate impacts. This involves comprehending plant acclimation mechanisms, leveraging functional traits as indicators, and applying technological innovations like sensors, remote sensing, predictive models, and advanced methods for nutrient cycles and soil health. Growing public awareness necessitates quantitative approaches linking agricultural practices to ecosystem services. Agroecological methods are being adopted to enhance biodiversity, soil health, water retention, and resilience.
This collection delves into: quantifying environmental factors; agricultural resilience and climate change adaptation/mitigation strategies; sustainable practices' impact on ecosystem services; and precision agriculture innovations for resource optimization and sustainability.
This Collection aims to gather a broad range of observational, theoretical, and experimental studies, spanning a range of scales (from cells to agro-ecosystems), also by a multidisciplinary approach (form morpho-functional traits to remote sensing). Original research and novel Methods papers are welcome as well as Reviews and Opinion articles, which may consolidate this topic and indicate future research priorities.
