Discover Applied Sciences is a fully open access, broad-scope journal launched in 2018 under the former journal title SN Applied Sciences (2023 Impact Factor: 2.8). The journal is indexed in DOAJ, ESCI, Scopus and several other indexing services. The journal has Section editors for the various research disciplines covered by the journal. These are members of the academic leadership at the journal, advise the publisher on key developments in their field, and play an active role in the academic scope and in the development of the journal.

Dr. Helder I. Chaminé joined the Discover Applied Sciences Editorial Board in 2018. He has always been keen to contribute towards the Journal's growth and development. He expressed his interest to increase his engagement with the journal and move to the role of a Section editor when we announced the position.

We had a brief discussion about the role and its responsibilities, and he graciously accepted to be the Section editor of the journal’s section Earth and Environmental Science.

Here's a short interview with our new Section Editor:

What is your current research focused on?

My research bridges GIS mapping, engineering geosciences, and sustainable groundwater management to address today’s most pressing environmental challenges. I focus on the development of GIS-based applied mapping, rock mechanics, and engineering geology, as well as hard rock hydrogeology, with practical applications in exploration hydrogeology, urban groundwater systems, water resources management, and rock mass hydrogeomechanics. A key aspect of my work is designing nature-based solutions to tackle climate variability, geohazards, and water resources management issues. I actively foster an international network in the earth and environmental sciences. Ultimately, my research crosses the connections between geoscience, engineering, and societal needs to promote resilience, sustainability, and informed decision-making in complex natural and urban environments.

What are the most interesting emerging topics or new technologies/new developments in your field of research?

A significant societal challenge today is bridging the gap between research and real-world applications in the earth and environmental sciences. To truly address pressing environmental issues, research funding must prioritize problem-solving and support collaborative projects that embrace academia, industry, and society. In my view, fostering clear, synergistic communication with the public is essential—not only to advance scientific understanding but to protect our Earth's vital systems. By aligning scientific knowledge and innovation with societal needs, we can create a meaningful impact and build resilient, sustainable communities.

Some exciting and forward-looking developments are shaping the future of environmental and earth sciences:

  • Advanced GIS Mapping & Remote Sensing

The cutting-edge integration of real-time satellite data, LiDAR, and UAV-based mapping is revolutionizing high-resolution environmental and earth data analysis and modelling. These tools enhance spatial decision support systems for managing georesources, environmental protection, mitigating geohazards, urban planning, and heritage.

  • Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning

AI and ML are transforming environmental geosciences, enabling predictive geological modelling, geohazard forecasting, and the automated interpretation of complex datasets with unprecedented accuracy and speed.

  • Smart Water Resources Management

Sensor networks allow continuous monitoring of aquifers, water quality, and subsurface hydrological stress. In addition, nature-based solutions—such as green infrastructure and aquifer recharge systems—are being designed to enhance resilience to climate variability and environmental protection.

  • Geoethics & Societal Integration

There is a growing emphasis on geoethics, community engagement, and transdisciplinary approaches to ensure the sustainable and equitable use of natural resources, especially in urban and vulnerable regions.

Tell us about your role as an Editorial Board Member (EBM) on the journal Discover Applied Sciences and your vision as a Section Editor, and what made you want to take up this role!

As an Editorial Board Member (EBM) of the journal Discover Applied Sciences, I play a crucial role in supporting and enhancing the journal's editorial quality and particularly, reviewing and evaluating submissions; advising on editorial policies when requested, and contributing to the strategic development of the journal, promoting inter- and transdisciplinary research, and, last but not least, ensuring scientific integrity and ethical standards in the peer-review process.

As a Section Editor, my vision is to create a dynamic and inclusive platform that bridges scientific understanding and innovation with real-world impact, particularly in applied geosciences and environmental sustainability. I am passionate about promoting inter- and transdisciplinary research that addresses global challenges. Taking on this role was a natural step for me, as it enables me to support emerging topics and developments, uphold rigorous scientific integrity, and contribute to shaping the future of the applied sciences. What truly motivates me is the opportunity to connect research with practice, ensuring that knowledge serves both society and our understanding of Earth systems.

Do you have any advice for new members of the board?

Joining the editorial board is both a privilege and a responsibility. I encourage you to consider this role with a commitment to scientific integrity, ethics, and a strong sense of stewardship. Stay informed about emerging trends in your field and actively support high-quality, innovative research. Constructive engagement with authors, reviewers, and editors is key—your insights help shape the scientific dialogue and uphold the journal’s standards. Fostering inter- and transdisciplinary exchange is essential to bridging the gap between science and society. One impactful way to contribute is by promoting topical collections on cutting-edge themes that reflect real-world challenges and insights.

What do you enjoy most or look forward to about your work on the journal?

What I enjoy most about my role in Discover Applied Sciences is the opportunity to be at the forefront of scientific innovation. I help shape the direction of applied research that addresses real-world challenges, which I find deeply rewarding. Supporting authors in refining their work, collaborating with a global network of experts, and contributing to a platform that values scientific integrity and interdisciplinary dialogue are all aspects I cherish. I particularly look forward to ongoing support for topical collections on emerging themes. These collections not only highlight cutting-edge research but also foster meaningful connections between science, society, and environmental sustainability.

Lovely to have you onboard in this new role,  Dr. Helder I. Chaminé , and I am sure your contribution will help the journal reach new heights!

Chemistry: Applied Phytochemistry: Characterization, Extraction, and Applications in Food, Pharmaceutical, and Agriculture

Phytochemicals are secondary metabolites distributed in the plant kingdom, and some can also be obtained from animal and fungal sources. These metabolites can be classified into alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids, phenolic acids, terpenes, and essential oils. Many of them have been associated with health-promoting effects in humans, as potential biocide agents to mitigate the use of chemical pesticides in agriculture, or as biostimulants in different crops. Due to the many applications of phytochemicals new techniques and optimization strategies are being studied. This topical collection deals with articles related to the characterization techniques and emerging and new extraction methodologies of phytochemicals from different sources. It also comprises the application of phytochemicals in the formulation of functional foods, nutraceuticals, bio-pharmaceuticals, and agriculture as biocides or biostimulants.
