Nature Communications publishes high-quality papers representing important research advances that might not necessarily have the scientific reach of papers published in the Research Journals (e.g. Nature Human Behavior or Nature Sustainability).

Founded in 2010, we are a selective, fully open-access publication that now stands as the scientific journal with 85 full-time, professional editors – the most of any journal in the world. In 2017 we published over 4,400 papers.

Nature Communications is a cross-disciplinary journal. Across the natural sciences, we cover everything from particle physics to genetics to ecology, but Nature Communications also publishes research from the social sciences – and we are actively engaged in raising our profile in this area.

Recent Nature Communications publications related to social science have included papers on the impact of the global financial crisis on Chinese CO2 emissions (Mi et al. 2017), the relationship between social network position and economic status (Luo et al. 2017), and gender inequity in scientific conference speaking presentations (Ford et al. 2018).

A particular strength of Nature Communications lies in the diversity and breadth of expertise of our editorial team, which gives us a unique capacity to handle interdisciplinary work. Because we have editors specialized in topics from biochemistry, to psychology, economics, climate change and sustainability, we welcome research that might not find an obvious home at topic-specific journals. Research that spans the social and natural sciences is more than welcomed.
