Matthew E. K. Hall is the David A. Potenziani Memorial College Professor of Constitutional Studies, Professor of Political Science, Concurrent Professor of Law, and Director of the Rooney Democracy Institute  at the University of Notre Dame. He received his PhD from Yale University in 2009 and specializes in interdisciplinary research that spans the fields of American politics, political psychology, constitutional law and courts, and organizational behavior.  In 2019, he won the Rev. Edmund P. Joyce, C.S.C., Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching from the University of Notre Dame.

Hall's current research explores popular support for democratic norms in the United States (especially free speech and voting rights), political psychology, and the role of politics in the workplace. He co-directs the Politics, Organizations, and Psychology (POP) Lab with Brittany Solomon. His earlier work focused on American political institutions, law, and policy. His first book,  The Nature of Supreme Court Power (Cambridge University Press, 2011), which won the C. Herman Pritchett Award for the Best Book on Law and Courts from the American Political Science Association, examined the policy consequences of Supreme Court rulings. His second book, What Justices Want: Goals and Personality on the U.S. Supreme Court (Cambridge University Press, 2018), tested the role of personality traits in shaping the behavior of Supreme Court justices. He has also published numerous articles in leading journals, including Nature Human Behaviour, the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Science, the American Journal of Political Science, the Journal of Politics, Political Analysis, Public Opinion Quarterly, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, and Organization Science.
