About Simon Laursen
My research focuses on quantifying emissions of climate-relevant biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) from terrestrial Arctic ecosystems. I combine field-based measurements of BVOC emissions at the plant level in Arctic tundra environments with advanced analysis of hyperspectral and thermal imagery acquired from drones and satellites. By integrating detailed ground observations with remote sensing data, I aim to upscale local measurements to landscape and potentially regional scales. Large-scale estimates of BVOC emissions are essential for improving our understanding of Arctic climate feedback mechanisms and for providing key inputs to climate and Earth system models. Through this work, I seek to advance our understanding of how rapidly changing Arctic ecosystems interact with the atmosphere and influence future climate trajectories.
