Aerobiology and Planetary Health: advancing research for a changing world

The atmosphere is one of Earth's largest and most dynamic ecosystems, influencing both environmental processes and human health. Understanding its biological components has never been more important as societies confront the challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution.
To celebrate its 40th anniversary, Aerobiologia launched the topical collection Aerobiology and Planetary Health, highlighting the critical role of aerobiological research in addressing global environmental and public health challenges.
The collection welcomes studies on bioaerosol exposure, environmental change, long-term atmospheric trends, methodological innovations such as artificial intelligence and environmental DNA, and strategies to improve air quality and human well-being.
Particular attention is given to research from underrepresented regions, including Africa, Asia, and Latin America, as well as interdisciplinary approaches that connect environmental and health sciences.

To mark four decades of publishing cutting-edge research, Aerobiologia invites submissions to a Topical Collection exploring the evolving role of Aerobiology within the Planetary Health framework.
Planetary Health emphasizes the interconnectedness of human well-being and Earth’s natural systems. As one of the planet’s largest ecosystems, the atmosphere plays a vital role in both ecological processes and human health. Aerobiology, with its focus on bioaerosols and airborne biological particles, is uniquely positioned to address the challenges posed by global environmental change.
This celebratory collection seeks contributions that explore the impact of multi-exposure to bioaerosols and their implications for Planetary Health. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Multi-exposure to bioaerosols and non-biological agents in different environments (indoor and outdoor) and their synergistic effects on human health, supported by clinical and epidemiological data.
- Impacts of human-driven environmental change (climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, etc.) on bioaerosol sources, patterns, and characteristics, with emphasis on previously understudied geographical areas such as Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
- Long-term and large-scale trends in bioaerosols (up to continental scales), emphasizing big-data approaches.
- Methodological advances and innovations, including artificial intelligence, environmental DNA, and related technologies, for defining safety thresholds for exposure to bioaerosols and establishing good air quality metric standards.
- Proposals and strategies for improving air quality regarding bioaerosols in order to promote human health, well-being, and the sustainability of human civilization within the Planetary Health framework.
We welcome original research articles, reviews, and short communications from interdisciplinary fields.
