Protecting the global food supply does not end at harvest. Insects continue to cause losses during storage, processing, and distribution, affecting food availability, economic livelihoods, resource use, and the sustainability of food systems. At the same time, increasing insecticide resistance is challenging many of the tools traditionally used to protect stored commodities.
This webinar will feature Georgina V. Bingham (University of Nebraska-Lincoln), who will discuss how sustainable pest management, post-harvest protection, effective sanitation, and the responsible use of natural resources can contribute to protecting food systems while strengthening livelihoods and public health.
Using the maize weevil (Sitophilus zeamais) as a case study, the presentation will examine recent research on long-lasting insecticide-incorporated netting (LLIN) and explore whether the synergist piperonyl butoxide (PBO) can improve the performance of alpha-cypermethrin LLIN against field and pyrethroid-resistant insects. The findings illustrate both the potential of synergists to enhance efficacy and the importance of designing pest-management strategies around resistance rather than assuming susceptibility.
Moving beyond this specific example, the discussion will consider how sanitation, resistance management, monitoring, physical barriers, and other integrated approaches can work together to protect food after harvest while reducing unnecessary pesticide inputs. Through the lens of the Sustainable Development Goals, the webinar will highlight how post-harvest pest management contributes to reducing food losses, strengthening food security, protecting livelihoods, and promoting responsible use of resources.

About the Speaker
Georgina V. Bingham
Georgina V. Bingham, PhD, FRES, is Research Associate Professor in the Department of Entomology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Faculty Fellow of the Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute, and Adjunct Associate Professor at Kansas State University. Her applied research focuses on sustainable management of arthropod pests affecting food security, stored products, livestock, and human and animal health. Her work combines insect biology, insecticide-resistance management, post-harvest protection, innovative pest-control technologies, and surveillance to develop practical tools for resilient agricultural systems. She works across academic, government, industry, and international partnerships, with a particular interest in translating research into approaches that reduce food losses, protect resources, and improve livelihoods.
