About Devon Payne

I am a geomicrobiologist that focuses on microbial physiology in response to different chemical conditions and nutrient sources.  I am fascinated by how cells performing difficult processes such as nitrogen fixation are able to thrive in different environments far more challenging that how they are traditionally studied in vitro.

Biological evolution is constrained by geochemistry: a molybdenum case study

Prevailing views of microbiology are based on contemporary organisms that can be readily studied. Yet, the life we know of today is just that - organisms that have evolved to thrive in current conditions. This leads to paradigms that explain most life today but are less useful for their ancestors.
