About İsmail Şan

I am a Professor of Curriculum and Instruction and the Assistant Director of the Graduate School of Education at İnönü University. My academic mission is driven by a synthesis of four core pillars: Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Philosophy, Educational Technology, and Mathematics Education.

I approach educational technology not as a superficial upgrade, but as a profound philosophical shift in how human cognition interacts with machines. My research challenges the status quo by merging deep theoretical pedagogy—such as rhizomatic learning and programmed instruction—with advanced digital ecosystems like generative AI and virtual reality.

Mathematics education serves as a primary cognitive battleground for this integration. Whether I am investigating metaverse-based mathematics environments or designing evidence-based digital micro-credentials, my focus remains on building structured, logical, and computationally sound learning architectures. Education in the algorithmic era requires more than just new tools; it demands a robust philosophical foundation and a curriculum designed to foster true critical cognition.

Knowing Its Name, Not Its Nature: Unmapping the AI Illusion in Higher Education

Students use AI constantly, yet our data reveals a harsh truth: they fundamentally misunderstand its nature. They know the tool's name, but lack real AI cognition. Here is how we mapped this gap and why evidence-based micro-credentials are the required solution.
