About Kartik Aiyer

I work in the field of Electromicrobiology, which looks at how microbes can move electrons and generate electricity. My research has focused on understanding mechanisms of how electroactive microbes transfer electrons outside their cells, and how we can use this for applications like biosensors and cleaning up pollution. Currently, I’m studying cable bacteria—filamentous microbes that can transport electrons over centimetre-scale distances. I’m interested in how these bacteria perform long-distance electron transfer and what that means for microbial communities and bioelectronic applications.
