Intraindividual double burden of malnutrition among women (15–49 years) in South Asia
The individual double burden of malnutrition (IDBM) is an underexplored public health problem. In this paper, we did secondary analyses of DHS data in three South Asian countries - India, Myanmar, and Nepal to study the prevalence of the coexistence of anemia and overweight/obesity among women.
Paleo diet may reduce breast cancer risk
Our study explores the association between a score appraising the Palaeolithic dietary pattern and the risk of incident postmenopausal breast cancer.
Mendelian randomization can lead to flawed conclusions about the effects of vitamin C
A Mendelian randomization (MR) study concluded that vitamin C was not effective for pneumonia. We showed that the MR study corresponds to the comparison of two groups with similar vitamin C levels of 47.3 vs. 52.7 μM, whereas the plasma vitamin C level range in the population is from 10 to 100 μM.
Vitamin C: abrupt termination may increase mortality of sepsis patients
The recent LOVIT trial of vitamin C for sepsis patients found that mortality was increased in patients randomized to the vitamin C group. In a re-analysis we show that mortality was increased only after the 4-day vitamin C administration was terminated, but not during the vitamin C administration.
Body iron stores and the risk for non-communicable disease in Indian children
High body iron stores have been associated with a higher risk for diabetes, dyslipidaemia and even hypertension in adults, with defined pathophysiological mechanisms. This association has not been described in iron supplemented children, and is relevant in India with universal iron fortification.
Do dietitians in Canada prescribe carbohydrate restriction? A survey of knowledge, use and barriers
Before 2020, diabetes nutrition care excluded carbohydrate restriction but growing evidence supports this approach now included in Canada’s Clinical Practice Guidelines. We assessed the knowledge, use and barriers of dietitians to improve diabetes nutrition care in Canada.
Nutritional characteristic of children with inflammatory bowel disease in the nationwide inflammatory bowel disease registry from the Mediterranean region
It is well established that weight loss and underweight are a common manifestation of pediatric inflammatory bowel disease at diagnosis. But, the prevalence of undernutrition varies in the reports according to method used for evaluation of nutritional status, disease type, and time.
The temporal pattern of early adiposity in Indian babies
Indian babies are thought to have relatively more fat mass for a given body size compared to other ethnicities, but we do not know whether this extra accretion begins during foetal life (appearing at birth), or occurs during postnatal life, particularly when catch-up growth occurs in small babies.
Normal-weight obesity in adolescents: a hidden problem
Normal-weight obesity is defined by the presence of normal weight according to the BMI, together with excess body fat. Although it is well recognized in the literature about the complications associated with BMI-defined obesity, few studies have evaluated normal-weight obesity in adolescents.
