What is this collection about?

The landscape of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) is evolving rapidly through scientific and technological innovation and policy considerations. In order to honour the Paris climate agreement, it will be essential to have the best available information on risks and opportunities associated with carbon dioxide removal, as well as its up-scaling and deployment. Full consideration needs to be given to accountability as well as uncertainties in removal pathways and durability.

In this cross-journal collection from Communications Earth & Environment, Communications Sustainability, Nature, Nature Climate Change, Nature Geoscience, Nature Communications, npj clean energy, npj climate action, and npj environmental social sciences, we showcase articles that help with understanding how carbon dioxide removal can contribute to climate change mitigation. We welcome complementary submissions for editorial consideration by the participating journals.

Why is this collection important?

This is a cross-journal collection between Communications Earth & Environment, Communications Sustainability, Nature, Nature Climate Change, Nature Geoscience, Nature Communications, npj clean energy, npj climate action, and npj environmental social sciences. Authors are welcome to submit to any of the participating journals. Giulia Faucher, Phd, GEOMAR Helmholtz-Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, Germany

Giulia Faucher is a marine scientist passionate about understanding how our oceans can help tackle climate change. She holds a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship and works as a postdoctoral researcher at GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, within the Biogeochemical Processes group of the Biological Oceanography section.

 

Jay Fuhrman, PhD, Joint Global Change Research Institute, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and University of Maryland, USA

Jay Fuhrman is an Earth scientist at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory’s (PNNL’s) Joint Global Change Research Institute. His research focuses on carbon management technology assessment including geologic carbon storage and carbon dioxide removal and utilization. He uses coupled energy-climate models to understand pathways to achieving net-zero emissions and their implications for global and regional land, water, and energy use.
