What is this collection about?

Fire is an increasingly important challenge for sustainable development. Changing fire regimes driven by climate and land-use change can affect carbon storage, biodiversity, water resources, food systems, human health, and ecosystem resilience, while also creating opportunities for improved risk management and adaptation. With this cross-journal Collection, the editors at Communications Earth and Environment, Nature Cities, Nature Communications, Communications Sustainability, npj Natural Hazards, npj Clean Air, npj Soil Ecology, npj Forests, npj Environmental Social Sciences, npj Climate Action, and Scientific Reports bring together studies that advance understanding of how fire influences environmental and societal sustainability and explore pathways to reduce fire risk and enhance resilience. Communications Earth and Environment, Nature Cities, Nature Communications, Communications Sustainability, npj Natural Hazards, npj Clean Air, npj Soil Ecology, npj Forests, npj Environmental Social Sciences, and npj Climate Action will consider original Articles, Reviews, and Perspectives. Scientific Reports will consider original Articles.

Why is this collection important?

This is a cross-journal collection between Communications Earth and Environment, Nature Cities, Nature Communications, Communications Sustainability, npj Natural Hazards, npj Clean Air, npj Soil Ecology, npj Forests, npj Environmental Social Sciences, npj Climate Action, and Scientific Reports. Authors are welcome to submit to any of the participating journals. All manuscripts published in the collection are hosted on a dedicated nature portfolio portal, giving articles high visibility beyond the journal they are published in.

Why submit to a collection?

Collections like this one help promote high-quality science. They are led by In-House Editors who are experts in their fields and supported by a dedicated team of Commissioning Editors and Managing Editors at Springer Nature. Collection manuscripts typically see higher citations, downloads, and Altmetric scores, and provide a one-stop-shop on a cutting-edge topic of interest.

Guest Editors for Communications Earth & Environment

Mengze Li, Phd, National University of Singapore, Singapore

Dr Mengze Li is an assistant professor at the National University of Singapore. His research interests include biogeochemical carbon cycles, atmospheric compositions and chemistry in various environments (e.g. ecosystems, urban, indoor), remote sensing, and atmospheric modeling. He integrates atmospheric observations (satellite remote sensing, airborne and ground-based), atmospheric and climate modeling, and machine learning to quantify the emissions of atmospheric compositions from natural and anthropogenic sources (such as wetlands, wildfires, agriculture, landfills, oil and gas), understand atmospheric chemistry, and estimate their impacts on climate change. Before joining the National University of Singapore, he worked at Stanford University and the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, USA as a postdoctoral researcher, and he received his PhD from Max Planck Institute for Chemistry, Germany.
