Can AI Be Human Enough for Mental Healthcare?

I still remember our first discussions in the winter of 2024 when we began drafting this work. Coming from the field of educational technology, where technology is an essential and rapidly evolving part of practice, entering psychology felt like encountering strong skepticism. It raised an important question: how could machines contribute to a discipline that is deeply personal, complex, and centered on human experience? That's when this chapter emerged.
Our chapter, "Can AI Heal? A Conceptual Exploration of the Potential of AI in Mental Healthcare," published in Generative AI Revolution: Sustainable Artificial Intelligence-Powered Applications, explores this vital intersection of artificial intelligence and human psychology, examining the potential role of AI in mental healthcare.
The chapter argues that AI is not a replacement for mental health professionals but a complement, and it indicates its capacity to help fill gaps in mental health care around the world. It discusses how key technologies such as Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing (NLP), and Computer Vision can add value at different stages of clinical care. These applications include early detection of mental health problems based on digital behavioural patterns, automated intake assessments, more accurate diagnosis and personalised treatment planning. The chapter also looks at the rise of AI-enabled therapeutic tools, from early cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) chatbots like Woebot and Wysa to more advanced generative artificial intelligence (AI) systems like ChatGPT. Ellie is a case study of a virtual AI therapist. It demonstrates how artificial intelligence can use non-verbal cues to encourage patients to open up more, but also its failure to build real therapeutic relationships. It also critically addresses key ethical challenges, including data privacy concerns, algorithmic bias on underrepresented populations and the risk of undermining human-centred care. We advocate for emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration and strong regulatory frameworks to ensure that ethical AI use to ensure that it enhances personalised, compassionate, patient-centred mental health care.
