Personal ailment: Neck pain, back pain and vitamin D deficiency led to fetch my first extramural research grant
Published in Zoology & Veterinary Science
Mizoram is among one of the North East states of India, have difficult hilly terrain and with limited access of transport via air and road. Recently, it has been connected to rail network. During my Ph.D. I worked on leptin and testicular activity in male bats, and also discovered mechanism of sperm storage in the female tract of bat. The department of Zoology of Mizoram University was established in 2005, and I was 6th Faculty in the department. During that time department had no much facility with regard to animal model work. I wonder how I will work on animal model to continue my research career. In beginning, no fund was available, even buying of some chemical would have cost. I was also not allowed, probably, not entitled to guide even PG. student’s dissertation. One of senior faculty has assigned his own PG students to guide, coincidently, at that time I have been awarded with start-up grant from UGC, New Delhi. However, no manpower was allowed in that start-up grant. Despite, work of assigned student, I manage to published my first paper as corresponding author. This was a shift in animal model, from bat to rat. This was start of my independent research career.
I thought of moving ahead, since, my Ph.D. work was focused on the adipokines and sperm storage, I was about to write some research proposal for funding to the agency. All of sudden my neck was paining; I took some medicine with consultation from physician and suggested to go through physiotherapy. My pain was elevating day by day, and one day I could not keep my left hand down, because it was paining from neck to fingers. This was further aggravated by my back pain. I was admitted in hospital in Aizawl, capital of Mizoram and orthopedic surgeon suggested that immediately I should go for operation because, nerve was pinching in cervical vertebrae. Furthermore, doctor said ignorance may be cost me like my body could be paralyzed. Then, I asked doctor I would go for my second opinion and then I was released from hospital and fly to next city. There I consulted a few orthopedic surgeon and suggested and continue to go for physiotherapy. Even after some day, I did not get much relief, then I consulted another doctor, but this new orthopedic doctor suggested me to check my vitamin D levels and continue physiotherapy.
Once result of serum vitamin D came in the evening of same day, I and doctor was socked, my vitamin D levels was 6 ng/ml. This showed severe vitamin D deficiency. I was given vitamin D shot for one week and continue physiotherapy; it was month of July 2015. As I planned before to submit research proposal to funding agency, July was last date for application of fast track scientist proposal. I missed that chance, I was also told not to sit for longer time. While lying on bed (physiotherapy) I thought this vitamin D deficiency has cost me academically and financially as well. Then I started thinking how I can use this vitamin D deficiency as a motivation and with positive spirit. Then I decided I will work on vitamin D and I will not let this deficiency go in vain and thought how to link to my filed, before that I had no idea how vitamin D can be linked to reproduction and testicular activity in particular. Since I could not sit for longer duration, then while lying on bed I started to search and finally formulated one research project on vitamin D with respect to gonadal aging in male and female mice. I submitted to one funding agency, it was rejected and I shattered and thought it was waste of time. I did try to get self-motivation and revised my proposal and remove female part and submitted to another funding agency. Once result came, I have been granted to work on vitamin D with respect to testicular aging in male mice. This proposal had helped me to establish my lab with various facilities and I published four papers from the same project and successfully guided my first Ph.D. scholar. That is why my own ailment and constrain had help me progress in my research career.
