We are pleased to introduce Communications Sustainability, a new, editorially selective open access journal from the Nature Portfolio. We are open for submissions and looking to publish articles that contribute to making the world more sustainable. Articles that present novel scientific insights with proven applicability to sustainability; policy analyses and recommendations; analyses of solutions for sustainability or demonstrably effective technological advances all fall within our scope. We invite disciplinary studies in fields across the natural and social sciences and engineering, as well as interdisciplinary work that combines several of these fields – as long as they help to preserve the planet for current and future generations.  Submit your work at our manuscript submission and tracking system.

Windmills on mountain top

Communications Sustainability will complement the existing titles in the Communications series and provide a high-visibility platform for thorough, compelling, and important work across a broad field of research.

This new journal will benefit from an experienced team of in-house editors, who work in parallel for the established journal Communications Earth & Environment. A dedicated Editorial Board for the journal will ensure that Communications Sustainability meets the needs of our community of readers, authors and reviewers and select for publication the most topical, high-quality and robust research. We will endeavor to

  • Build communities around key open questions, beyond disciplinary boundaries. Understanding how human and natural systems interact often relies on more than one traditional discipline. Using remote sensing to study how a changing environment affects human mobility; examining the psychological mechanisms driving acceptance of sustainable policies; measuring how biotechnology can improve food security while reducing environmental impact: we offer a forum drawing on the full range of expertise of sustainability research.
  • Encourage diversity. We call on people from all backgrounds, affiliations, geographical locations and career stages to contribute to Communications Sustainability. We pursue gender balance among our Editorial Board, reviewers and commissioned authors. We hope to engage scientists with a multitude of individual perspectives to help build a journal that is a valuable forum for the entire sustainability community, wherever they come from, live and work. We are particularly committed to providing early career researchers from around the world with a platform where their voices are heard, so that they can become the next generation of stewards for the planet.
  • Champion progress towards transparency, reproducibility, and Open Science. We endorse the principles of the Enabling FAIR data project http://www.copdess.org/enabling-fair-data-project/ ; we will publish peer review reports along with the name of editors and, if they so choose, referees, to increase transparency and recognition; we welcome submission of independent confirmations of the most influential research; and we publish fully open access.

At Communications Sustainability, we are very excited about the journey that lies ahead of us. We wholeheartedly invite you to join us.
