Collection Overview

Scientific Reports has launched a Guest-Edited Collection on Physical activity and cognitive function across the lifespan.

The positive effects of physical activity on cognitive function are well documented in the literature. Regular exercise supports brain health and is associated with a lower risk for cognitive decline. Considering the rapidly aging global population and the significant increase of sedentary behaviour and physical inactivity among young people nowadays, studies that involve research from across the lifespan in this domain are timely.

This will be a Collection of original research papers and will be open for submissions from all authors – on the condition that the manuscripts fall within the scope of the Collection and of Scientific Reports more generally. We are welcoming submissions until 28 February 2026.

Why is this Collection important?

“The rapidly aging global population and the significant increase of physical inactivity among young people are a worldwide concern, and impact general public health.” - Cédric Albinet

“The relationship between physical activity and cognitive function is fascinating in its bidirectionality and robust effects in multiple populations. This Collection is a unique opportunity to showcase updated evidence for the mind-body connection.” - Elizabeth A. Salerno

This Collection supports and amplifies research directly related to the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG-3) Good Health & Well-Being.

Why submit to a collection?

Collections like this one help promote high-quality science. They are led by Guest Editors, who are experts in their fields, and In-House Editors and are supported by a dedicated team of Commissioning Editors and Managing Editors at Springer Nature. Collection manuscripts typically see higher citations, downloads, and Altmetric scores and provide a one-stop-shop on a cutting-edge topic of interest.
