Career Path & My Career Profile: Biotechnology and Genetics Lecturer and Reviewing Editor
Published in Protocols & Methods and Cell & Molecular Biology
Can you introduce yourself and tell us a bit about your career path?
I am a researcher and lecturer specializing in biotechnology and genetics, with a focus on miRNA regulation, amino acid metabolism, and cellular responses in human cells. I am currently working at Trakya University, Türkiye, conducting research on metabolic adaptations, ER stress, and translational aspects of cancer and fibroblast biology.
My academic journey began with a PhD in biotechnology and genetics, during which I conducted a comprehensive proteomic analysis of liver metastases in breast cancer, focusing on glycoproteins and glycan-related genes. I also hold a national patent in this area, with the international patent application currently in progress. This was followed by postdoctoral research exploring the role of miRNAs in cellular metabolism and stress responses. Over the years, I have published multiple original research articles and reviews, examining molecular mechanisms that regulate human cells under physiological and pathological conditions.
In addition to my research, I am actively involved in the peer-review process. I have served as a Trusted Reviewer for international journals and have recently been invited to serve as a Reviewing Editor within Springer Nature’s Reviewer Communities, a role that I will begin soon. This opportunity allows me to contribute to maintaining scientific rigor and quality in published research.
What is your current role and what does it involve?
As a lecturer and principal investigator, I supervise research projects in biotechnology and genetics, and collaborate on interdisciplinary studies in cellular metabolism and molecular regulation.
In my upcoming editorial role as a Reviewing Editor, I will be responsible for evaluating manuscripts, suggesting reviewers, and supporting the peer-review process to help ensure high-quality publications within the Springer Nature network. This new role will allow me to contribute to the global research community beyond my own lab.
What advice would you give someone at the start of their career?
Stay curious, proactive, and open to new experiences. Engaging in research, writing, and peer review early in your career strengthens your scientific thinking, communication skills, and professional network.
What challenges have you faced in your career so far, and how have you dealt with them?
Balancing research, teaching, and editorial responsibilities can be demanding. I have learned to manage time effectively and view each role as complementary. Adapting to the evolving landscape of scientific publishing has been a challenge, but taking active roles as a reviewer and editor has helped me remain confident and up-to-date in my field.
