Research in the field of headaches has traditionally been heavily focused on pharmacological solutions, despite the need for a thorough revision of the classification system, insufficient attention to clinical aspects, and the slow and challenging process of identifying biomarkers to aid in the management of primary headaches, even for those with less specialized expertise.
This vision of cultural expansion must include a new generation of young potential researchers approaching the cross-disciplinary subfield of headache research. The Journal of Headache and Pain today stands as a significant draw for young researchers due to its top-tier positioning in neuroscience, clinical neurology, and pain medicine journals. However, it is evident that a potential barrier for early-career researchers lies in securing the funds required to cover the Article Processing Charge (APC).
To address this, a Thematic Series 2025 Early Career Research Mentorship Program has been launched, dedicated to this category of young talents—PhDs, Postdocs, or Residents—offering 10 full individual waivers throughout 2025. Access is unrestricted by geography (Global North or Global South), affiliation, or membership in Health Care Professional Working Parties.
The only selection criteria are innovation and quality, which will be assessed and validated through peer review.
The waivers will be granted to the first 10 manuscripts that, after passing peer review, are accepted for publication, with the acceptance date—as recorded in the Peer Review Report accompanying each published article—serving as the deciding factor. Each author may submit only one manuscript as the corresponding author.

Migraine and Brain Health: Towards Better Understanding from the Asia-Oceania Region
We are pleased to announce a Collection in ARCH focused on Migraine and Brain Health: Towards Better Understanding Across lifespan from the Asia-Oceania Region. This series aims to highlight the growing importance of brain health, with a specific focus on migraine, one of the most prevalent and disabling neurological disorders worldwide. The series seeks to foster greater understanding of the regional perspectives, unique challenges, and innovations in migraine research and brain health management across Asia and Oceania.
We invite submissions of original research, editorials, rapid reviews, and commentaries that explore a wide range of topics, including but not limited to the epidemiology of migraine in the region, novel treatment approaches, preventive strategies, cultural and socio-economic factors impacting brain health, and the use of digital health technologies in migraine care. We are particularly interested in work that advances the understanding of migraine’s pathophysiology, as well as studies that address disparities in care and access to treatment in the Asia-Oceania region.
Authors from the geographic regions covered by ARCH are encouraged to submit their work. This Collection offers a unique platform to contribute to global migraine research while emphasizing the perspectives and needs of the Asia-Oceania community.
All submissions in this collection undergo the journal’s standard peer review process. Similarly, all manuscripts authored by a Guest Editor(s) will be handled by the Editor-in-Chief. As an open access publication, this journal levies an article processing fee (details here). We recognize that many key stakeholders may not have access to such resources and are committed to supporting participation in this issue wherever resources are a barrier. Hot topics in headache and pain from the EHF-SAS
This collection of articles results from the tight collaboration between the European Headache Federation (EHF) and its Official Journal, The Journal of Headache and Pain. The educational aim of EHF, its own School of Advanced Studies (EHF-SAS), provides for nurturing talented young researchers in the headache area. Each Meeting of the EHF-SAS ends its path with the preparation of a review on special topics to be submitted for regular peer-review. EHF provides economical support for the related APCs. In such way we think that the positive loop might be maintained and attract more and more young researchers.
This collection of articles has been sponsored by the EHF. Articles have undergone the journal's standard peer-review process overseen by the Editor-in-Chief.
