Open Science is an important part of research and publishing. It's a very complex subject but often it is boiled down to open access, both in terms of data and publications.

However, the reality of Open Science is more complex than that. Making data available, doesn't necessarily make it open. It's quite possible that available data cannot be interpreted by anyone except the person who generated it. 

By the same token, just because information or data is not free, doesn't mean that it is not open. Producing data and information is not without cost, so who should carry it in order to make science more open?

I think that Open Science is important but I realised that I am quite ignorant to the details and nuances of what is involved which is why I signed up for this Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) from the European Project ORION.

The deadline for registration is Friday the 18th of October and the course begins on the 21st of October. Here is the syllabus if you are interested:
