About Kristien Van Reeth
The influenza group of Prof. Van Reeth focuses on swine influenza viruses and porcine respiratory coronavirus (PRCV). We use the pig as a model for human influenza and other viral respiratory infections of humans. Important research topics include: Pathogenesis and immunobiology of influenza and PRCV in pigs; Role of the pig in the generation of novel pandemic influenza and coronaviruses; Broadly protective vaccination strategies against influenza in pigs; Surveillance for influenza in swine and for coronaviruses in swine and cattle.

Influenza is not a single virus, but a collection of subtypes broken down into many different strains. Ordinary flu vaccines can only protect against a small proportion of these. Here, we obtained a surprisingly broad protection by sequential vaccination of pigs with highly diverse “H1N1” strains.
