The cross-sectional descriptive study by Elshenawy et al. (2025) offers essential insights into pharmacists' evolving roles in antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Conducted within a UK NHS Foundation Trust, the research investigates pharmacists' knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions toward antibiotic prescribing, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and AMS practices, underscoring pharmacists' critical contributions in combating AMR during an unprecedented global health crisis.

This study is particularly valuable as it highlights pharmacists’ adaptability and their essential roles during health emergencies. One striking finding is that most pharmacists demonstrated substantial awareness of AMR, viewing it as a pressing public health concern. Dr Elshenawy and colleagues' study suggests robust pharmacist-led AMS initiatives require structured education, training, and clear communication of resistance data. It strongly advocates enhancing pharmacists' leadership roles in AMS, positioning them as central figures in mitigating the AMR threat. The findings of this research not only illuminate pharmacists' critical roles during a crisis but also underline the importance of preparedness and ongoing workforce development in addressing future global health emergencies effectively.
